Cell Counter App

As part of cellular biology experiments, researchers often need to count the number of cell colonies growing in a Petri dish. Currently, this work is manually done by hand, with undergraduate and graduate student researchers painstakingly counting each of the 100s of colonies on a plate, and trying to distinguish between cell colonies and air-bubbles. In additon to being time consuming, this tedious task is often prone to error.
To improve cell counting accuracy and duration to complete the process, a team of capstone students developed a smart phone cell-counter app. The app takes a picture of a cell colony and identifies and counts each cell colony using image processing algorithms.
Two sets of capstone teams worked on this project, one team worked on an iOs version of the application and the other an Android version. The iOS Cell Counter Team members are Kimberly Aguero, Gilenn Collado and Paul Hurd. The Android Cell Counter App team members are Daniel Blike, Kishan Patel, Neal Patel, Vanessa Villa and Jeremy Watson
